Losing significant weight, whether from surgery or other methods, often leaves behind stubborn excess skin. And unfortunately, diet and exercise won’t melt it away, leading many to consider a lower body lift after weight loss in Washington DC.
This procedure tackles the surplus skin and fat around the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and legs – dramatically reshaping the lower body for a slimmer, more confident self.
What You Need to Know About Lower Body Lifts
A lower body lift (extended abdominoplasty or belt lipectomy) is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess skin from the lower half of your body.
Doctors often perform these contouring procedures on patients who have experienced substantial weight loss. Why? Because after losing weight, the skin may not fully retract along with the fat decline, which can impact its elasticity. Dealing with this can be quite uncomfortable, burdensome, and incredibly frustrating.
About the Procedure
Lower body lifts can give you a more streamlined figure by removing unwanted skin and, in some cases, a small amount of fat. We use a combination of liposuction and surgical techniques to achieve this refinement.
After administering general anesthesia, the surgeon will make incisions around your trunk, usually in a “belt line” shape. Additional incisions may be made depending on your desired outcome. Next, liposuction will minimize excess fat from the lower body, abdomen, back, and sides.
Finally, we can remove excess skin from the lower torso and trunk. To do this, the surgeon will carefully suture muscles and potentially reposition the belly button while tightening the remaining skin. Finally, the incisions will be gently closed with sutures after the skin has been smoothed and positioned.

- Easier time exercising without unwanted weight dragging you down
- Reduction of excess skin and fatty tissue from the body
Ideal Candidate for a Lower Body Lift
Lower body lifts, a type of major plastic surgery, are best performed when the patient is in good health and has realistic expectations. Before surgery, it’s essential to be healthy, aware of potential scarring, and at near-ideal weight. Losing some weight during the procedure is expected.
Additionally, preexisting conditions and smoking can hinder healing, so it’s crucial to consider these factors and make your doctor aware of any active infections, etc.
A lower body lift could offer relief if unwanted skin significantly impacts your life, causing irritation and discomfort when exercising, sleeping, or wearing certain clothes. Additionally, it benefits women with post-pregnancy skin laxity and those experiencing age-related sagging.
What to Expect
An initial consultation with our expert team will take place before your surgery. During the consultation, they will review the options, risks, surgery and recovery details, costs, and limitations. This appointment is your opportunity to ask questions and meet with the surgeon to determine whether you are a good candidate for a lower body lift after weight loss in Washington DC.
Recovery Timeframe
Because lower body lifts involve general anesthesia, overnight hospitalization under medical supervision is standard for optimal recovery. Additionally, the first few weeks after surgery may include bruising, swelling, and mild pain. We will provide temporary drains, pain medication, and special compression garments for several weeks to help with the healing process.
You’ll need to schedule some time off from work as the healing process takes a few weeks or more. During this time, you may find it challenging to perform everyday tasks such as going upstairs, lifting objects, or exercising. After several weeks and follow-up appointments, you can resume work and your daily routine.

FAQ
Here are the most common questions we receive regarding lower body lifts after weight loss in Washington DC:
1. How is a body lift different from liposuction?
Lower body lifts do not effectively target excess fat reduction. Removing excess skin and reshaping the body is the primary objective of body lifts.
2. How long do the results of lower body lifts last?
The good news is that the results are permanent (provided no significant weight gain occurs to reverse the results).
3. What are the risks of lower body lifts?
Like any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects such as swelling, bruising, discomfort, numbness, and redness. That’s why choosing highly skilled surgeons with extensive experience for this procedure is important.
