KYBELLA
Extra fat under the chin and at the jawline can be upsetting to many DC area men and women. Even for those who exercise consistently and eat a healthy diet, this stubborn submental fat, or ‘double chin’ is often difficult to address. Up until recently, there were few options for eliminating submental fat and restoring a sleek chin or neck that did not include surgery and liposuction. Luckily, today there is a safe and easy option: Kybella.
If you have moderate to severe excess fat beneath the chin, Kybella can help destroy fat cells under the chin to improve your profile. At Peel Haus, our experts are pleased to perform Kybella for patients in the Washington, DC area.
The active ingredient in Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, and once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. This results in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin, revealing an improved chin profile.
Your provider at Peel Haus will create a customized treatment plan to address the submental fat under your chin based on your particular chin profile. At each treatment, you will be given multiple small injections under your chin. Treatments are spaced at least one month apart. Each patient is unique, but many of our patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatments of Kybella.
Kybella is FDA-approved for the elimination of moderate unwanted fat beneath the chin, on the chin, and on the lower cheeks, or the jowls. You are a good candidate for Kybella if you want to reduce your double chin, or excess fat on other areas of the lower face to smooth and slim your facial appearance.
While most people are a candidate, Kybella is not for everyone. Our experts might caution against kybella treatment if you:
There are some conditions that are not treatable with Kybella, such as:
Skin loses elasticity as we age. The skin beneath the chin may sag, causing the appearance of a double chin. This condition is not treatable with deoxycholic acid.
Microgenia is a common condition that can cause the appearance of a double chin early in life. This double chin is due to a weak bone rather than submental fat, so it can not be treated with Kybella.
Muscles in our neck can become loose as we age, and cause creasing and banding. Kybella can not treat this type of double chin, but Botox injections can help.
Kybella treatments at Peel Haus are performed in our DC office and customized for each patient. The treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed before your provider marks the area with a pen to ensure the injections are inserted in the proper location. Your neck and chin areas will be numbed prior to make the treatment more comfortable. Once this has been done, your provider will proceed with the injections. Depending on your individual treatment plan, you will receive up to 50 injections during a single treatment. Each injection will be spaced one centimeter apart with a 30-gauge or smaller 0.5-inch needle. The treatment will take roughly 30 minutes.
Patients can expect their Kybella recovery to take 1-2 weeks. Temporary side effects such as tenderness, mild redness, and bruising will dissipate quickly. Patients should expect noticeable swelling for several days. Much of this will subside after three to four days, but some remaining swelling can take up to 2 weeks. Some patients have a much greater degree and duration of swelling. This is a risk of Kybella treatment that cannot be predicted in advance. Patients typically have the greatest swelling with the first Kybella treatment.
