Patients who have gotten liposuction in Washington, DC have used this trusted and popular treatment to achieve their body contouring goals by removing unwanted fat cells. Schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at Peel Haus to learn more about this body sculpting procedure. She has performed many successful liposuctions in Washington, DC, helping her patients achieve a flatter, tighter abdomen.
Liposuction, sometimes shortened to “Lipo,” is a surgical procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat cells to reshape and recontour areas of the body. If you have worked hard to reduce your weight but still find that you have excess fat, liposuction may be the answer for you. The result is better fitting clothes, a smooth contour, and improved self-confidence. At Peel Haus, we are pleased to offer patients liposuction in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area.
Liposuction — is one of the most popular procedures that our plastic surgeons perform and is a part of our Mommy Makeover package. During the Liposuction procedure, your board-certified plastic surgeon will remove the excess fat to reshape the body. Liposuction of the flank (love handles) to give their body a more hourglass curvature. Additionally, liposuction of the upper back can be performed to circumferentially contour the trunk and improve the patient’s profile.
The results of Liposuction in Washington, DC are amazing, and patients are incredibly pleased with their results. It can:
Liposuction removes small pockets of fat to improve a person’s shape, but it’s not a substitute for substantial weight loss. A good candidate for liposuction is someone who is already at or near their ideal healthy weight but has discreet areas of fat with minimal excess skin.
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure or a treatment for obesity. Gastric bariatric surgery will provide better results if you are obese. Be aware cellulite and stretch marks are not improved with liposuction. If you are not obese but have excess fat and excess skin, a Tummy Tuck may be a good option to give you the results you desire.
Liposuction is a good option for anyone who wants to remove excess fat deposits left behind after childbirth or weight loss. This includes people who have lost weight after having weight-loss surgery, as well as people who have lost weight primarily through exercise or dieting.
Liposuction in Washington, DC is often part of our Mommy Makeover for women who have excess skin and fat due to pregnancy. However, it is best to postpone a Tummy Tuck until after you are finished having children as a subsequent pregnancy could create the need for an additional tummy tuck.
Liposuction candidates are evaluated on an individual basis, however, there are commonalities amongst appropriate candidates for liposuction. In general, good liposuction candidates:
If you still have a lot of weight you want to lose or are planning to have more children in the future, it may be better to put off having liposuction. This is because losing more weight or having more children will further change your body, and that may undo some or all the effects of the liposuction procedure.
Love Handles
The waist and flanks, often called the “love handles,” are extremely common areas for liposuction. For many patients, getting rid of love handles and achieving the contours they desire via diet and exercise alone can be incredibly difficult. Liposuction here can help patients see great results, especially when they have reasonable-to-excellent skin elasticity.
Upper Arms
The “batwing” is something that can affect men and women, but it is particularly common in women as they age. Even if you’re not overweight, it is possible to have an unpleasant “arm jiggle” due to lack of muscle tone. Liposuction can help smooth and tighten the area for a firmer, more youthful appearance.
Abdomen
Plastic surgeons often divide the abdomen into “upper” and “lower” regions that may be treated separately. The lower region is responsible for the dreaded “muffin top,” which makes it a popular place for liposuction in Washington, DC. The upper region is the area between your belly button and ribs, which can also stubbornly hold onto a layer of fat. Liposuction in these regions can help patients achieve a slimmer, sleeker profile.
Hips
For many women, having smooth, shapely hips is important to maintaining a feminine silhouette, so women often undergo liposuction here to remove excess deposits of fat. Doing so helps to create a more well-defined shape and can even help improve the look of the buttocks as well.
Back
The back is probably not the first place you would think of for liposuction, but the procedure can be actually quite effective for reducing back rolls, sometimes called “bra rolls.” Liposuction here can contribute to a firmer, smoother appearance.
Thighs
There are three sections of your thighs that can benefit from liposuction, and they’re often all treated together. First, liposuction can be performed on the outer thigh “saddlebags” to enhance the patient’s overall shape. The inner thighs can also be contoured (to help give the patient a thigh “gap” when standing), and the posterior thigh, which is the “banana roll” area, can be shaped to give the buttocks a firmer, more defined appearance.
Chest
Though women can undergo chest/breast liposuction, this is more common for men than women. Men who may suffer from gynecomastia or older men who may have suffered a loss of muscle mass can look to liposuction to remove excess, unwanted fat.
Liposuction surgery is completed in an outpatient setting under general anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will make small incisions in the skin. She will inject numbing medication and epinephrine to prevent excessive blood loss and bruising. A cannula will be used to suction out excess fat. Afterwards, your plastic surgeon will close the incisions. The surgery may take several hours, depending on the number of areas being treated. In your recovery room, a post-op team will assist you with managing pain, dress the area with a compression garment, and monitor your vitals before you are approved to be discharged.
Patients ambulate from the surgery center immediately after the procedure and are fully recovered within 10-14 days. Patients are required to wear compression garment post-procedure to further shape the areas treated. Garment compliance is crucial to achieve the goals of the procedure. Full results are seen 6-8 weeks post-procedure. I ask my patients to make at least one lifestyle modification before the procedure to ensure their results can be maintained post-procedure. It can be as simple as adding 30 minutes to your exercise regimen or decreasing your daily sugar intake. The most important thing to remember during this process is that you should follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions closely. Don’t hesitate to contact our office if you have questions or concerns.
Directly following a liposuction in Washington, DC, you can expect to feel mild discomfort, and see bruising, redness and swelling. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe medications to minimize any discomfort. It is important to allow your body time to rest. You will be instructed to wear a compression garment for six weeks to help reduce swelling and promote healing. Swelling usually starts to go down by the end of the first week but wearing the compression garments should continue as otherwise directed. Within a few days, you should be comfortable enough to return to work. You will want to avoid any strenuous movement or exercise that could cause complications.
Small incisions are made during the procedure in order to remove the excess fat cells. Your plastic surgeon will do his or her best to make the small incisions in inconspicuous areas whenever possible, so they won’t be as noticeable. It is important to follow your plastic surgeon’s post-procedure instructions, including the care of these incisions to help with healing and minimize scarring.
The results of Liposuction will not be seen immediately after the procedure. Generally, patients can expect to see final results between 1-3 months after the procedure.
Due to swelling, you may even as if you have gained weight or are looking larger in the area treated. While liposuction can remove up to 10 pounds of fat cells during a procedure, fluid retention and swelling can cause bloating. You will begin to see results as the swelling subsides.
Some patients may notice loose skin in the treatment area. Depending on factors like age or the amount of fat removed by your plastic surgeon, non-surgical or surgical intervention may be necessary to tighten up the skin. Every person is different and your plastic surgeon will include skin tightening as part of your body contouring consultation if warranted.
While liposuction permanently removes excess fat cells in the treatment area, the remaining cells can continue to store fat and grow in size. Following a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly will help you maintain a healthy body weight and achieve your desired results. Liposuction can remove stubborn excess body fat and help you achieve your desired body contour, but it is essential to have realistic expectations and know that maintaining your new look long-term requires a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
If you are a generally healthy person but wish to contour your abdomen while strengthening the abdominal wall, a tummy tuck procedure may be a great option for you. The first step is making sure you’re a good candidate, and that you have realistic goals in mind.
