DERMAL FILLERS
FDA-Approved
Many visible signs of aging can be traced back to volume loss. Dermal filler can be used to replace lost volume in the cheeks and around the mouth, plump the lips, and restore a more youthful and balanced appearance to the face At Peel Haus, our expert injectors customize dermal filler treatment for each patient. We only use FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers which are made of a sugar complex found naturally in our bodies. Enhancement with filler should be subtle and natural-looking. Improvements are typically seen instantly, with best results noted in 4-6 weeks which results can last from 6 to 12 months, or longer. There are many filler options to choose from and our expert team is here to help you determine the best solution for you.
As we age, we naturally lose collagen and fat. This leads to thinness of the skin and sagginess of the face. Dermal filler works by replacing that volume, thus making the face appear more youthful and refreshed. When dermal filler is injected into the face, the hyaluronic acid in it starts binding to water immediately, which plumps up the skin and reduces the appearance of lines. In fact, HA can absorb up to one thousand times its weight in water and fluids, so small amounts can be effective in treating many areas of the face. And while hyaluronic acid is usually liquid, we inject it in gel form, which means it retains a plumper appearance in your face for longer. On top of all that, this treatment actually stimulates your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen.
Collagen and elastin Production
If your collagen and elastin production has slowed – which happens when we age – dermal fillers can help. That’s because hyaluronic acid (HA), the main ingredient in dermal fillers, has been clinically shown to boost collagen and elastin levels when injected into the skin. These are both key building blocks to younger, “bouncier” skin.
Immediate Results
Whether you’re getting dermal fillers to treat wrinkles or to plump up thinning lips, you’ll see results immediately. However, the change will continue to evolve for a short time after injection due to the nature of the process. We advise patients not to judge their results until two-four weeks after the treatment session.
No Downtime
Dermal filler treatment can be completed in just minutes depending on the number of areas needing treatment. The side effects you may experience as a result of your filler treatment are minimal. You may have mild to moderate swelling or redness at your injection site; however, it should dissipate within a few hours to a few days. To minimize bruising, your injector can give recommendations on what you can do before and after your treatment.
Long-Lasting Effects
Yet another benefit of fillers is the lasting results you’ll enjoy after getting them. Depending on treatment area and the dermal filler that is used, you’ll stay looking more youthful and beautiful for about one year. It’s in your best interest to maintain your filler results. You can do this simply by scheduling your next treatment before your filler has had the chance to metabolize entirely.
Plumpness
Dermal fillers can be used to correct the facial volume loss and “sunken” look that can develop as a result of the normal aging process. Common areas of accelerated facial volume loss are the cheeks, smile lines (around the mouth), temples, undereye pre-jowls and jawline angle. Fillers can be used to mimic the bone and fat tissue that decreases in the face, offering a more youthful appearance.
Say Goodbye to Scars
A major advantage of springing for fillers is that they can improve the appearance of scars. Our expert injectors will determine if dermal fillers are an option for treating acne or other scars you have.
Although dermal fillers share an active ingredient, there are differences between them that may make them better suited to certain patients and certain treatment areas. During your consultation, Peel Haus expert injectors will carefully examine your areas of concern and determine the best options for you. Dermal filler may be right for you if you would like to improve the following concerns:
● Nasolabial folds
● Marionette lines
● Vertical lip lines
● Forehead lines
● Cheek lines
● Lost volume in the cheeks
● Insufficient volume in the lips
● Temporal hollows
● Lack of definition in the jawline or chin
The good news is that you have plenty of dermal filler options if you are seeking a safe, non-surgical, non-invasive option to restore volume loss and smooth skin. At Peel Haus, our goal to ensure you can meet all of your aesthetic needs at our office. If you are interested in dermal filler, here are some of your dermal filler solutions:
Juvederm: A filler that uses hyaluronic acid that plumps the skin by absorbing and holding water where injected. The Juvederm family consists of several popular fillers including Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Vollure, and Juvederm Voluma. Each filler is ideal at treating different facial areas and aging symptoms.
Radiesse: A popular calcium-based filler that instantly plumps the skin while stimulating long-term collagen production. This filler can treat severe facial folds as well as volume loss issues in the cheeks, neck, hands and other areas of the body.
Restylane: A hyaluronic acid filler with several formula versions including Restylane-L, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne. Restylane is great for treating persistent wrinkles like the lines around the mouth that are caused by puckering.
Sculptra: A filler that utilizes Poly-L-Lactic Acid to add volume and thickness to the skin. Sculptra is a highly effective filler for treating sunken areas of the face due to volume loss.
Each of these fillers is unique and offers different advantages depending on your personal volumizing, fill, and lifting goals.
Dermal filler injections at Peel Haus are performed in our DC office with minimal preparation and barely any downtime. To ensure you’re comfortable throughout the treatment, we’ll apply a numbing cream to the face. Then, one of our expert injectors will carefully and strategically inject the filler using a fine needle and/or a cannula. Treatment is typically quite comfortable and brief, with most patients in and out of the office in less than an hour. Following your treatment, you may return to your regular activities immediately, and with fillers, your results are instantly visible.
Most Washington, DC area patients can return to their everyday activities after dermal filler injections. They won’t need any downtime. While our physicians use advanced injection techniques to minimize bruising and swelling, you may still experience these side effects. Do not be alarmed if there is some swelling, as it will subside within a few days.
If you do experience some minor bruising, we recommend picking up some arnica gel to help speed healing. You can also apply makeup over any bruising to cover it up. Because of the possibility of bruising and swelling, we do not recommend having filler injections immediately before a big event. Give yourself time for healing to make sure you look your absolute best.

What are dermal fillers?
Injectable dermal fillers are gel-like substances composed of hyaluronic acid injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines, soften creases, and provide facial contouring without the downtime associated with surgery.
What is the downtime after dermal filler injections?
There is little to no downtime with fillers. There is a risk for post-procedure bruising, which is higher in areas such as the eyes, where there is a high density of vessels and delicate tissue.
What should I avoid before having dermal filler injections?
For 14 days before your procedure, avoid the following: Omega-3 fatty acids, Fish oil, Aspirin, NSAIDs (including Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve), Vitamin E, Ginseng, Ginger, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Green Tea, Alcohol, Salt. Avoid dental work, including routine teeth cleaning, one month before and one month after treatment with fillers.
Do I need filler if I’ve had a face lift?
Most likely, the answer is yes. Facelifts achieve a lifting and tightening effect. However, it does not replace the volume that has been lost. As we age, we lose volume in our face, which should be subtly replaced during rejuvenation to achieve the most harmonious results.
How Long Do Fillers Last?
Depending on the location, the type of filler, and your body’s resorption ability, dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years.
What should I expect after my dermal filler procedure?
After injections with fillers, common side effects may include temporary swelling, bruising, redness, or soreness at the treatment site. To reduce or minimize discomfort, we recommend applying ice-packs or cold compresses to the injection sites for at least 15 minutes immediately after treatment (with continuation every hour if you are prone to bruising).
Is There Anything I Should Avoid After My Filler Procedure?
While regular activity can be resumed immediately after injections, rigorous exercise should be avoided for the remainder of the day to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. If you have filler treatment of the tear trough, avoid anything that puts pressure on the area (like wearing goggles, massages, scuba diving) for one month. It is best to sleep on your back for one week following your procedure. Avoid sleeping on your side for 2-3 days, if possible.
Does it hurt to get dermal filler?
Most patients experience only mild discomfort. A local anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to the treatment for a more comfortable experience. Many of our fillers are also formulated with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort.
What are the risks and side effects of dermal filler injections?
In general, dermal fillers are considered very safe. The most common reactions are redness, swelling, bruising, itching, and tenderness. These are typically mild and resolve spontaneously in 1-7 days for most patients. Other side effects are very rare.
Will I look natural after dermal filler injections?
When fillers are used in the appropriate amount and placed in the right location, the result is a beautiful, natural, youthful outcome. Fillers are not meant to create totally different features. In the hands of an experienced provider that has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, the outcome simply enhances one’s own facial features.
How long does dermal filler treatment take?
The treatment time will depend on the area being injected and how much filler is needed. But, generally, dermal filler treatments are quick, taking less than 15 minutes. For more intensive filler treatments – like the liquid facelift – the procedure can take about 30 minutes to an hour. If a numbing cream is used, you’ll have to wait roughly 20 minutes for it to kick in before the treatment begins.
