Areola or Nipple Reduction Surgery
Among the many cosmetic procedures done every year, nipple or areola reduction surgery ranks high. Why? Because nipples and areolas may enlarge or stretch for various reasons, including but not limited to age, weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and plain genetics.
If you want a more proportionate appearance, our plastic surgeons can help! Areola or nipple reduction surgery in Washington DC, allows women and men to achieve their desired cosmetic appearance in these areas.
What You Need to Know About Areola or Nipple Reduction Surgery
Many patients choose to have an areola or nipple reduction surgery to address distorted or overly enlarged nipples/areolas, seeking a more balanced look with the rest of their chests.
Anatomy-wise, the areola typically has a darker skin tone compared to the surrounding skin – with the nipple situated at its center. Many patients find these areas less aesthetically appealing, prompting them to seek reduction surgery.
Fortunately, areola and nipple reduction surgeries in Washington DC are a popular and safe procedure that can successfully decrease the size of these areas. It may be performed alone or simultaneously with other treatments. Mommy Makeovers frequently combine these procedures with breast augmentation and lifts to achieve comprehensive rejuvenation.
About the Procedure
During an areola reduction procedure, our skilled surgeons will carefully mark the area for reduction and remove any excess skin to achieve the desired size. The surgeon simply removes excess skin and pigmentation around the perimeter, resulting in a lighter appearance. And the nipple remains untouched!
During a nipple reduction, the surgeon carefully makes tiny incisions and removes any excess tissue, effectively reducing the nipple size. Then, the incision is closed with discreet dissolvable sutures – resulting in a seamless finish.
Our goal is to create breasts that are not only functional but also visually appealing. And for both procedures, typically, only local anesthesia is needed.
Benefits of Areola or Nipple Reduction Surgery
Our goal with nipple or areola reduction surgery is to enhance the appearance of the breasts by reshaping these features to complement the overall breast size and patient physique. The outcome is a breast contour that looks natural and aesthetically pleasing.
These surgeries provide solutions to address various concerns related to nipple size, shape, and areola appearance. If your nipples/areolas are too large, sagging, or sticking out, a nipple or areola reduction may be helpful.
Additionally, reductions can create evenness in breast appearance by addressing drooping areolas or tightening the surrounding skin. Women are the majority of patients, but nowadays, more men are choosing this cosmetic procedure.
Ideal Candidate for Areola or Nipple Reduction Surgery
For any plastic surgery procedure, candidates must be in good health and have realistic expectations. If you’re looking to enhance your self-esteem or change the size of your nipples, reduction surgery may be suitable for you.
Most of our patients have one or more of the following issues they want to address:
- unusual areola
- swollen nipples
- disfigured areolas or nipples
- nipples that stick out too much
- areolas that are sagging or drooping
- areolas or nipples that are asymmetrical
- nipples that don’t match the surrounding areas
Additionally, women who want to breastfeed should wait to have the surgery until they have completed nursing. Even though these treatments are typically safe and don’t pose many risks, they could damage milk ducts.
What to Expect From the Procedure
The process for areola or nipple reduction surgery in Washington DC starts with an initial consultation with our team. During the consultation, they’ll discuss your goals and medical history and explain all the surgery details, including limitations and recovery time.
Treatments typically range from 30 minutes to an hour, allowing you to return home on the same day. And if you only undergo one procedure with local anesthesia, you can drive yourself home.
Recovery Timeframe
After the surgery, secure dressings will protect the area for a few days. It’s also important to wear supportive sports bras or similar styles for the first couple of weeks to ensure proper healing. Additionally, patients must refrain from sexual activity until their follow-up visit or until all sutures are removed or dissolved.
And finally, getting enough rest is crucial for a smooth recovery! That’s why patients need to take a week off if their job requires physical activity. For those working in an office, a short break might be all they need.
